The Basics: How Does Roulette Work?
There can be 1-7 players in the game. Each of them gets their own set of chips to use. These are not regular gambling chips (not the ones you use to play poker with) since you need to be able to differentiate between whose chips are on the table.
The roulette is a wheel that has compartments with numbers from 1 to 36 and a 0 (the American version also has an additional cell for 00). The cells with numbers are in alternating black and red colors, while the 0 (or 00) is green. A small white plastic or ivory ball is also used in the game.
So, how does roulette work? A dealer (sometimes called “croupier”) makes the wheel revolve in one direction and then releases the ball in the opposite direction. In the end, the ball lands onto one of the sections to determine the color, the number, and whether it is odd or even.
Chips are placed on the table that has cells corresponding to how many numbers on a roulette wheel are available (there may or may not be a 00) and some other options for players to choose from: 1-12 (alternative: 1st 12), 13-24 (alternative: 2nd 12), 25-36 (alternative: 3rd 12), 1-18, 19-36, even or odd, black or red, 2 to 1, and the 0 (additionally, 00 for American roulette).
How to Win at Roulette: Types of Bets
If you want to understand how to play roulette and win, you need to know which options are available and how much they pay. Overall, bets are divided into the ones you place on the inside of the table (the numbers) and the ones you place on the outside section.
|Types of inside bets||How much the bet pays||Chip placement on the board|
|Straight (alternative: single-number)||35-1||A chip is placed on one of the numbers.|
|Split (alternative: 2-number)||17-1||A chip is placed between two cells with numbers.|
|Street (alternative: 3-number)||11-1||A chip is placed at the end of one of the 3-number rows (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, etc.) known as a “street”.|
|Corner (alternative: square, quarter, 4-number)||8-1||A chip is placed on the corners of four different cells with numbers.|
|Line (alternative: 6-number)||5-1||A chip is placed on the ends of two bordering “streets”.|
Outside bets can be divided into 1-1 bets (red or black, even or odd) and 1-2 bets (a column or a dozen).
General Guidelines on How to Win Roulette
In this game, players are not competing against each other; they are playing against the house. The biggest win is possible when a bet is made on one of the numbers, although they are also the riskiest bets a player can make.
Most players are wondering how to beat roulette. For centuries, they have been coming up with various theories and systems that try to explain how to win at roulette. However, the game largely depends on luck, and none of the attempts to increase the chances of winning have worked so far.
